Losing A Precious Animal Companion: Overwhelming Grief

If you prefer to watch a video of this post, visit my YouTube channel.

If you’ve recently lost your beloved animal, I am so sorry for your loss. I offer heart healing energy work if you need support.

My heart goes out to you. I know how it feels. And I don’t know if it’s the same for you as it has been for me, but losing an animal companion has been much harder than losing a person – and I’ve lost a lot of people throughout my life.

However you’re experiencing this heart-wrenching loss, I want you to know you’re not alone in feeling the way you do. I’m not going to sit here and tell you there’s a magic fix to make the worst feelings in the world go away, because there isn’t. Only time can do that. But I will share something with you that, I hope, will help you feel better.

Your Beloved Animal Is Your Whole World

Your beloved animal companion isn’t just a pet – they’re your whole world. You organise your day around them. You share routines. You look forward to spending time with them. They’re your friend – most likely your best friend. They’re there for you when you’re at your worst, and your lowest. They offer support. They listen without judgement, and they even understand you, even if they don’t know your words.

They don’t speak harshly to you, criticise you, or give you angry glares. They don’t shout abuse at you, put you down, or make you feel worthless. But they do love spending time with you. In fact, it makes their day. They greet you with boundless love bursting from their heart, as if they haven’t seen you for ages. They look at you with a soulful gaze that says, ‘I love you. You matter to me more than anything.’

When you’re with them, you feel seen. You feel heard. You feel loved, wanted, needed. You don’t have to change for them, or be someone you’re not. They accept you for being you, exactly the way you are. So when you lose all of that, the emptiness that follows can swallow you whole, as if the grief is consuming you from the inside. You might seem okay on the surface, just about holding yourself together, when really, you’re falling apart.

Why Losing An Animal Can Hurt So Profoundly

This grief takes everything that was good from you. It takes your energy, your desire to love and take care of yourself. It takes your appetite, your sleep. Your routines. It takes every ounce of joy. Life loses all meaning. You stop striving and chasing. Your goals, even your dreams and wishes, disintegrate, as if they just don’t matter anymore.

You feel as though you’re never going to be happy again. Never laugh or enjoy anything. And it feels like it will be that way forever.

And, honestly? You might always feel the loss as though it happened yesterday. You might cry every day for weeks, months, even years. But do you know what? It’s absolutely okay if you do. Loving another being so completely, so unconditionally, those feelings don’t just disappear.

That love will stay with you forever, and that’s how it’s supposed to be. Loving so deeply makes your heart expand. It fills the world with light.

But as each day passes, you’ll get further away from the worst day of your life, and, gradually, your heart will make space for the loss, alongside the love. The loss will become a part of you, together with the difficult memories and the unpleasant feelings of their last moments, but in time, a whisper of joy will emerge.

A happy memory of your beloved animal that once made you spiral into a river of sadness will carry you towards a smile, with the remembrance of the love you shared – and still have.

You Don’t Have To ‘Get Over’ Them

When you lose the one with whom you shared your whole heart, your whole self, your whole life, you might want to rush through the grief to the other side when life feels bearable again. But the letting go – the healing – it can’t be rushed. You need time to readjust. And it can take a while. It can take a long while. And you might feel as though you’ll be stuck in the endless abyss of pain forever. But you won’t, unless you choose to stay stuck.

So, please, show yourself some grace. Allow yourself the time and space to feel sad, to let your heart break apart. Let your feelings be what they need to be, and last as long as they need to last. And if you keep moving forward, even if it’s only one tiny step at a time, you will, eventually, feel better. It might not feel that way right now. But you’ll get there. You will. If you want to.

I know I’ve found it hard to move on when I lost Tobie.

My Experience Of Losing Tobie

Tobie wasn’t just my soul cat – he was, and still is, the love of my life. I’ve never felt this way about another being – human or animal. He was my once in a lifetime love, and when he died suddenly at a young age, the grief cracked me open. It was the worst experience I’ve ever had. I wanted to close myself down to avoid the pain. But I knew if I did, I would be closing myself off to Tobie in spirit.

And that was the last thing I wanted.

When Tobie comes close to me from the other side, the love he brings always, always moves me to tears. Loud, messy sobs that feel as though they’ll never end. But he isn’t trying to upset me – he’s healing me.

His love for me is so huge, it lifts my grief to the surface so I can let it move through me. And as awful as the grief has been, it is, bit by bit, fading.

I still have days when I want to punish myself for his death, where I believe I could have saved him. But nothing I did or didn’t do would have changed what happened. He’s told me that countless times.

I’m an animal communicator, by the way, and I want to share a few messages the animals have told me, important messages that are so very relevant for when you lose your beloved animal, and I hope they will help you or bring you some small comfort, at least.

What The Animals Have Taught Me About Death And Grief

So, if you’ve lost your beloved animal companion, please know that they planned their death down to the very last detail. Even if it happened suddenly, or they seemed too young, or it was an accident – by the way, there aren’t any accidents, not ever. The animals want us all to know there is nothing that you, or I, or anyone else can do to change their passing, unless your animal planned it that way.

Your beloved animal does not want you to blame yourself because you think didn’t do enough, or you should have done this or you shouldn’t have done that. Beating yourself up is a waste of energy. It makes you feel far worse, and it can even keep you stuck in the grief.

Your precious animal knows you love them with all of your heart and that you did the best you could.

Don’t Close Your Heart To Avoid the Pain

The other important message they like to share often is that they don’t want you to close your heart to love, just to stop feeling the pain. Closing the heart is a natural reaction when the grief is so intense, but when you close your heart, you close the door to your beloved animal in spirit.

You see, the heart is a doorway to the spirit world, and if you keep that door open, your beloved animal’s soul can connect with you from the other side to let you know they’re doing fine – better than fine, in fact. Through the open door in your heart, you can sense your beloved animal’s presence.

Just like I do with my Tobie. His presence is with me all the time, which is more than it was when he was alive in physical form. It isn’t the same, I’ll be honest, but it brings me great comfort.

And I’ll tell you this – if you have moments when you think about your precious companion but you start drowning in the sadness, remember that they are right there with you, surrounding you in their love, helping your heart to heal. So, let the tears come. Let the tears heal you.

And if you need help with the healing, or keeping your heart open so you can sense your beloved animal in spirit, I can help. I specialise in energy work.

I’m also creating courses to help people get closer to their animals in spirit and in the physical world, and I will soon launch a new community for animal lovers.

Things You Can do While You’re Grieving

There’s plenty you can do to help yourself while you’re grieving, and it starts with being kind to yourself. So, be patient with how you feel. Allow your emotions the time and space they need to heal. Spend time with people who understand, not those who don’t.

Write down everything you want to say to your precious companion. Tell them how you feel, how much you love them and miss them. Tell them anything you didn’t get to say before they left this world, because, I promise, they will be reading your words.

And most importantly, grieve at your pace.

If you have photos or videos of your animal companion who crossed over to the other side of life, and you’d like me to feature them in future YouTube videos as a way to remember them, please get in touch.

But right now, please share their stories and all the things you love about them, in the comments below. I would love to read them.

So my lovelies, I’m sending you my love and healing thoughts 💜.
