From what I’ve seen, animal communicators work in different ways. Some study animal behaviour to decipher the animal’s needs. Others connect with the animal’s psychic energy to receive messages. Those with a mediumship ability can speak with animals who have crossed over to the spirit world. How I communicate with animals is through my psychic and mediumship abilities.
Animal Communication as a Psychic Medium
I began exploring and developing my psychic abilities, or sixth sense, in 2009. Since then, and with daily practice, my sixth sense abilities have continued to evolve.
The sixth sense receives and decodes information from energy frequencies, and seeing as everything is energy, having a highly evolved sixth sense means I get overwhelmed easily, so I live my life as a hermit – the opposite of my ‘old’ life.
I receive psychic information in various ways: clairsentience (clear-feeling), clairvoyance (clear-seeing), clairaudience (clear-hearing), claircognizance (clear-knowing), clairtangency (clear-touch, or psychometry), clairallience (clear-smell), and clairempathy (clear-emotion). Clairsentience and claircognizance are my dominant abilities. Between 2009 and 2012, as part of my informal psychic training, I regularly attended a spiritualist church to develop my mediumship ability. A medium acts as a go-between, receiving messages from beings on the other side of the veil (specifically those who have physically died, although it isn’t always the case). So, through mediumship and my ‘clair’ abilities, I communicate with animals.

How I Communicate With Animals
When I want to begin an animal communication session, I turn inwards to connect with my Spirit team and I ask the animal’s soul and their physical animal energy to step forward.
There’s a huge difference between the animal’s soul and their animal energy.
The animal’s soul is a spark of the Divine, the same spark we each carry within, that accesses Divine truth and wisdom. An animal soul is the same as a human soul and remembers experiences from previous lives. The animal’s soul also knows about its purpose in their present life and can answer questions related to spirituality, such as, ‘How are they helping their human companion?’
The animal’s physical energy is similar to a human’s physical energy – think of it as their personality – where they express their self as an animal, with the limitations, strengths, fears and instincts of being in an animal’s physical body.
During an animal communication session, connecting with the animal’s soul and their physical energy together gives a more complete understanding of the animal.

How Animals Communicate with me
My mediumship ability allows me to connect with the animal’s soul, and through my sixth sense abilities, I receive information in a combination of communication styles, such as, images, words, feelings, emotions or an instant knowing. I always start sessions the same way:
- When an animal steps forward and connects with me, to confirm that the animal is who it says it is (and not a mischievous entity trying to trick me – yes, it happens occasionally), the animal will envelop me in unconditional love. If I don’t feel the love, I ask again until I get a response. If I don’t receive a response, then I don’t go ahead with the session. Or if the animal doesn’t come forward, it’s a ‘no’, or ‘not right now’.
- I then ask if it’s okay to go ahead with the session. If the answer is ‘yes’, I either see the animal walk towards me and rub against me or offer its paw or sit in front of me, or I hear a ‘yes’ or receive another love-hug. For a ‘no’, the animal will turn away, step back or say ‘no’.
Sometimes, I receive information in large quantities and quickly (the claircognizance ability), so I have to sort through the information and make sense of it without filtering anything through my human mind – which takes a lot of practice, especially if I’m receiving messages I might not want to hear or that might be complex to understand. When this happens, I check my understanding by repeating things out loud to the animal.
Occasionally, I receive messages that don’t make sense or seem confusing. This happens because my mind isn’t ready for the information or because it came through unclearly. Imagine trying to tune in a radio station and getting a lot of static with a few words here and there. That’s often how it can be when receiving psychic information.
Some days are better than others. Some animals communicate more clearly than others. And as with everything, I have good days and bad days with my abilities. It isn’t always as straight forward as having a conversation, like you would with a person standing next to you, but if that happens, I’m truly grateful because it requires less energy and less concentration.

Every day, I continue to develop my psychic abilities and expand my spiritual awareness, and the animals are my greatest teachers. In many ways, animals are more evolved than humans. They are masters of living in the present moment, not dwelling on the past or getting lost in the future; and they don’t compare themselves to others or experience negative emotions, such as hate or anger. Their love is unconditional, and they know better than any human how to have fun and bring joy.
But sadly, animals are deeply misunderstood by humans. In the western world, we’ve been brainwashed into seeing animals a certain way – as less evolved or less intelligent than us. Considering the mess humans have made of this world, are we really the intelligent, evolved species? Animals are our teachers and they deserve our respect, so it’s time we started listening to them.
Animal lovers often make misinformed choices for their companions due to a lack of awareness, albeit from a place of love. We take away the animal’s choice by imposing our misguided will upon them, sometimes in an effort to control them, without realising the consequences. Every action has consequences, so if we treat others, including animals, as we would like to be treated, we create good karma and a better experience for the animal.
In 2023, I awakened to a deep calling to work with the animals, beyond anything I’d done before. When I got out of my own way and stopped my fears and insecurities from holding me back, I decided to follow my inner guidance and be a voice for the animals. It’s my soul’s purpose to raise awareness of these remarkable creatures, so we stop and ask ourselves if we’re really treating them with the love and respect they deserve.
