We each get ungrounded at some point. Being ungrounded takes different forms and the symptoms can vary from person to person. In this post, I’ll explain:
Different ways to be ungrounded (physically, spiritually, etc).
Causes and symptoms of being ungrounded.
What Does Being Ungrounded Mean?
The dictionary definition of ungrounded:
adjective(1) having no basis or justification; unfounded: ungrounded fears.
(2) not electrically earthed: an ungrounded screen can act as an antenna.
(3) (ungrounded in) not properly instructed or proficient in (a subject or activity).
The first (1) dictionary definition of being ungrounded refers to being mentally ungrounded from unhelpful thoughts, anxiety or being irrational. The second (2) definition relates to electrical ungrounding. And the third (3) definition refers to a lack of knowledge and isn’t relevant to this post. So I’ll refer to definitions (1) and (2).
Different Ways To Be Ungrounded
Mentally Ungrounded
Feeling mentally ungrounded arises from an irrational fear that creates the belief that something terrible is going to happen. Sometimes the fear becomes a phobia. The mind conjures ‘what if’ scenarios of negative situations that probably won’t happen. And these harmful thoughts circle the mind like hungry vultures preying upon mental instability.

For the person experiencing this type of fear, the fear feels very real despite external circumstances showing otherwise.
Electrically Ungrounded
As we are beings of energy, electromagnetic energy—not just physical matter—we can become electrically ungrounded. And there are two ways of becoming electrically ungrounded: physically and spiritually.
Being physically ungrounded is the build-up of electrical static.
Being spiritually ungrounded is a build-up of spiritual energy, particularly around the head.
Causes and Symptoms of Being Ungrounded
Mentally Ungrounded
When the mind takes over and irrational, fearful thoughts engulf logic, reason and practicality, the person affected can show any of the following symptoms:
- Anxiety
- Panic
- Shortness of breath
- Dazed or distracted
- Shaking or trembling
- Crying or emotional
- Irritable or angry
- Depressed
- Insomnia
- Loss of appetite
- Increased or decreased thirst
None of us is immune to fear and becoming mentally ungrounded. Each of us have had or will have unhelpful thoughts that make us lose sight of what’s real and right in front of us. Whether it’s fear borne from the lack of something, such as not having enough money to pay the bills; a phobia, such as the fear of flying, heights, spiders, etc; or just plain old popular worry as we get lost in thoughts of a situation that hasn’t and probably won’t ever happen.
Getting caught up in a whirlwind of thoughts occurs if we don’t have control of our thoughts. Losing control of our thoughts, in my opinion, happens if we focus on the past or future too much, if we have negative beliefs or if we have unhealed trauma. The way we perceive our own personal version of reality relates to our past, and only by processing and healing past negative experiences can we bring the mind back into balance and create mental stability.
But for some, being mentally ungrounded can be overwhelming, affecting life quality.
Physically Ungrounded

Wearing clothes and shoes made of synthetic fabrics and walking on artificial flooring causes a build-up of static in the body. Using electrical equipment, especially items that emit electro-magnetic radiation, such as mobile and cordless phones, laptops, tablets, computers etc., creates static in the body. So if we dress in synthetic fabrics and have our feet on artificial floors while using radiation-emitting equipment, it doesn’t take long for static to accumulate.
How much static the body holds varies from person to person. Some are more sensitive, while others seem almost immune. My theory on this is that our own personal frequency influences how electricity affects us.
The symptoms of too much static are:
- Receiving minor electrical shocks when touching conductive things
- Hairs on the head and body rising, sometimes causing goosebumps
- Tingling sensations
- Feeling wired or jittery
- Unable to sleep
- Increased heart rate
Spiritually Ungrounded
Being spiritually ungrounded can sometimes happen for someone who is following a spiritual path, engaging in frequent spiritual disciplines such as meditation, connecting with the spirit realms when developing their sixth sense, or undergoing inner healing. For any of these spiritual practices, large amounts of light energy can flow into the body to help with spiritual evolution, causing the ungrounding.
A spiritual awakening can also trigger a strong feeling of ungrounding as the energy field opens and expands to receive more light frequencies. The high vibration light can feel invigorating, lifting the spirits to a high level, causing the ungrounding.
The symptoms of spiritual ungrounding are:
- Feeling dazed or spaced out
- Loss of appetite
- Feeling wired but tired and unable to sleep
- Giddiness
- Losing touch with physical reality
- Concentration problems
- Loss of the concept of time
How To Ground Yourself …
If You’re Mentally Ungrounded
As being mentally ungrounded arises from losing control of thoughts, the best way to ground yourself is by focusing on the physicality of the body: bring your attention back to the body and direct your mind into the present.
Doing something physical, such as exercise, walking, dancing, singing, or other movement, can quickly bring the attention back to the present moment. If anxiety is present, or other panicky feelings, deep breathing and focusing on the breath can help. As can distracting the mind from its negative spiralling.
Different things work for different people. If mental ungrounding persists, I suggest getting help from a health professional or therapist.
The best way to reclaim your power over fear is to find the trigger that causes the loss of mental control and face it.
If You’re Physically Ungrounded
Releasing static from the body is easy:
- Touching screws in an earthed light switch or socket
- Using special grounding equipment
- Going outside and touching a tree or walking barefoot on the soil or grass.
- taking a bath or shower

If You’re Spiritually Ungrounded
There are several ways to ground spiritual energy and move it through the body:
- Holding or wearing grounding crystals, such as black tourmaline
- Taking flower essences specifically for grounding
- Certain holistic therapies can help move the spiritual energy through the body
- Imagining you have roots growing from the soles of your feet
- Spending time in nature, especially close to trees
- Walking barefoot on the grass or soil
- Eating grounding foods—those that grow beneath the soil, such as root vegetables, or heavy, stodgy foods.
- Asking any of your spirit helpers to ground you.
As you can see, being ungrounded takes different forms and is caused by varying factors. Thankfully, we have various ways to restore balance to the mind, body and soul.
